ALFRED WAINWRIGHT’S LEGACY
The Pennine Journey long-distance footpath has been developed in recent years – based on Alfred Wainwright’s walk he completed in 1938. The development has largely been the work of David and Heather Pitt and is proving to be increasingly popular – not least because it is a circular walk, through some of England’s most stunning scenery.
A BEAUTIFUL, CIRCULAR LONG-DISTANCE WALK
Starting at Settle, the 247 mile walk goes through limestone country in the area of the legendary Three Peaks. The route takes in Wharfedale, Swaledale, past the Tan Hill Inn (the highest public house in England) and the ruined castle of Bowes. From Bowes, the route takes in Middelton-in Teesdale and crosses over to Weardale in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The beautiful medieval village of Blanchland is on the Durham / Northumberland border and from there walkers reach Hexham with its many facilities and magnificent abbey.
HADRIAN’S WALL COUNTRY
Leaving Hexham, the route follows in the most attractive central section of Hadrians Wall, with intriguing Roman sites such as Housesteads. This location – now a World Heritage Site – was Wainwright’s objective on his 1938 walk.
SOUTH VIA THE NORTH PENNINES AONB
At the western part of this section at Greenhead, the route turns south into the South Tyne Valley (part of the North Pennines AONB) and takes in Alston before skirting the shoulder of Cross Fell – the highest point on The Pennines (and the highest in England outside of the Lake District). After passing through the peaceful Eden Valley, walkers cross over two of the Three Peaks – Whernside and Ingleborough before ending the journey back in Settle.
