From A69 Carlisle/Newcastle Road
Follow the A69 east for approximately 18 miles from Carlisle/M6 Junction 43 or approximately 40 miles west from Newcastle upon Tyne
Turn left if coming from Carlisle or right if coming from Newcastle to Greenhead (signposted Greenhead/Hadrian’s Wall)
Follow road to junction (approx 400m) – turn right
In approx 200m, turn left opposite Greenhead Hotel
Pass Greenhead Hostel (old chapel) on right
About 100 yards along the track after the last house on the right, you will reach a small grassed area. Turn immediately right here
Bear right and go over bridge (please note this is a sharp turn and you may not realise there is a bridge until you are virtually on it!).
Follow the narrow track all the way (approximately ¼ mile) and Holmhead is at the end of it (please drive carefully as the road is unfenced and fields are often occupied by sheep or cattle)
PLEASE NOTE Satellite Navigation will get you lost! If you need to use it, key in the postcode
CA8 7HE and then follow the above instructions from Greenhead Hotel
We are directly on the Hadrian’s Wall Path and The Pennine Way, about 200 metres East of Thirlwall Castle. There is no need to go into Greenhead Village to find us! OS grid ref NY660661
From The Hadrians Wall Cycle Route, if you are travelling West, we are signposted off the cycle route about 400metres after GreenheadVillage.
If you are traveling East, look for the ruins of Thirlwall Castle (over the fields to your left) after you pass Longbyre. When you’ve passed over the river bridge, turn immediately left and you’ll see the sign for Holmhead. We’re about 250 m along the track.
